- Why is traditional Stained Glass so expensive?
This is an easy question to answer. The materials: art glass, lead, copper, solder are very expensive, and the number
of hours it takes to design and make a piece of custom glass is ridiculous. It's not the cost that's hard to believe, what's
hard to believe is that anyone in this day and age is still willing to make traditional stained and leaded glass panels.
- How is traditional stained glass priced?
Traditional stained glass is usually priced per square foot. My prices start at $110.00 per square foot for my most simple designs and top
out around $250 per square foot.
-
I look at other people's glass and it always seems
to have the same basic design. Your work shows so many different styles. Why is that?
Thank you. I try to make my glass fit the style of the building and the personality of its owner. My goal is to make the
window that you would like to have made for yourself.
- Can I bring you a design I want you to make?
Your sketch or a favorite design style can often start the process, but I don't want to slavishly copy anyone else's design.
- So how do we get started?
Give me a call (or send me an email) and tell me the dimensions of the piece you want,
the location in your house, church, or office, and whether or not there will be natural sunlight for illumination. We'll
talk about style, color, and theme that would be right. Then I'll make a watercolor or colored pencil sketch to let you know what
I'm thinking. You let me know if I've got it right or not. In the Lexington, Kentucky, area much of this can take place face to face.
- What if I don't live in the Lexington area?
That's OK. You'll see that I have pieces as far flung as Providence, Rhode Island, Pensacola, Florida, Indiana and Georgia. Email is wonderful
for sending sketches back and forth and I'll ship the glass to you strictly at cost. For larger installations we can make other arrangements.
I'm very flexible, and love the opportunity to deliver my pieces on mini-vacations.
- What is "zig's Retirement Plan?"
My glass is not overpriced, nevertheless, a lot of
people who really want one of my windows in their church or their home just
can't afford it right now. If that is your situation contact me and let's try to work
out something. My talents were a gift to me from God. So are the designs
that come to me. So are the customers who want my work. They are all gifts, and I am
not supposed to hoard them. I want my windows out in the world. I will hope that
God blesses you with some more money someday and will also prompt you
to remember me.
If that happens send me another check--that will be my retirement account.
If that doesn't happen then the difference between
what you could afford and what I asked will be my gift to you.
